Top 10 Tallest Hotels In The World
07/09/07 By Chad Davies, Staff Writer, On The Beach Holidays

We've all heard of hotels with great views, but what better than a view from 1,000 ft up? These hotels are at the top of their game, quite literally! You'll notice that 3 of the top 5 tallest hotels in the world are in Dubai, not surprising given the crazy construction boom currently happening there.

These hotels are all either completed or have been topped out, which makes them eligible for listing. Structures such as antennae, statues, flag poles and masts that are not deemed to be an integral part of the building do not count. Buildings that are not 100% for hotel use are included in the list as long as at least 90% of the height is occupied or used by a hotel.

1. Abbco Rotana Tower, Dubai
The tallest hotel in the world is the Abbco Rotana Tower in Dubai, a land of building sites in a race to the skies. At 1,093 ft tall, this hotel surpasses all others as the tallest hotel in the world. Due to open in 2007, Abbco Rotana Tower will have 72 floors of hotel rooms and luxury suites. As yet, we don't know what it will cost per night but you an assume it won't be cheap.

2. Ryugyong Hotel, Pyongyang
Who could resist a trip to the world's least democratic country? Coming in at 1,083 ft tall, the Ryugyong Hotel is actually just an empty concrete shell whose 3,700 rooms are yet to be fitted out. Construction of the hotel was placed on hold in 1992 when the project ran into serious financial difficulties. The North Korean government have been trying to revive the project by seeking outside funding to the tune of $300 million, which has yet to materialise. That's not surprising when you consider that North Korean tourism is a contradiction unlike any other. In true dictatorial style, the derelict building has never been placed on any official maps.

3. Burj Al Arab, Dubai
An iconic hotel that helped place Dubai at the forefront of modern architecture, the Burj Al Arab is a 1,053 ft tall luxury hotel sporting a 79 ft wide helipad that juts out some 688 ft above ground. This 6 star hotel is renowned for it's amazing decor and facilities that are second to none. In terms of pricing, a night at the Burj Al Arab will set you back just over $2,123!

4. Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel, Dubai
Another score for Dubai in the top 10 tallest hotels in the world. The Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel comes in at a height of 1,014 ft, has 400 individual rooms spread across 56 floors, of which 40 are exclusive luxury suites. A night staying the hotel's premier suite will cost just over $1,100; you'd need to have a very good view to justify that! And a fully stocked mini bar.

5. Baiyoke Sky Hotel, Bangkok
The Baiyoke Sky Hotel stretches 997 ft into the Bangkok skyline. While the building is mixed use, the hotel does occupy most of the 85 floors with 673 rooms spread over floors 22 - 74. Situated on the 83rd floor is a roof top bar; one floor above at the very top is an open air revolving deck affording visitors spectacular views over Bangkok below.

6. Cullinan North Tower, Hong Kong
Construction of the 886 ft tall Cullinan North Tower has not yet been completed, but the 68 storey building has been topped out making it eligible for inclusion in our list of tallest hotels. While not occupying the entire building, the north tower will be home to a luxury W Hotel and Ritz Carlton. Development costs for the whole site are reputed to be a staggering $2.5 billion.

7. Oasis Skyway Garden Hotel, Shanghai
You'd expect this upstart centre of world trade to feature somewhere in the top tallest hotels. The Oasis Skyway Garden Hotel reaches 742 ft at it's peak, that's 52 floors of mixed use space consisting of 454 hotels rooms and 239 serviced apartments totaling 693 suites. The development costs came in at $132 million so you can expect room rates at this five star hotel to be at the higher end.

8. Nagoya Marriott Associa Hotel, Nagoya
Situated on a prominent site in Nagoya, the 5 star Nagoya Marriott Associa Hotel has a total of 774 rooms, which breaks down into 423 standard rooms, 328 deluxe rooms, 15 luxury suites, 6 premier rooms and 1 Japanese Westerrn room. With 53 floors, this hotel comes in at 7th on our list of tallest hotels with a height of 741 ft.

9. Swissôtel The Stamford, Singapore
Part of the well known Raffles City complex, the inconveniently named 4 star rated Swissôtel The Stamford cost $410 million to construct, stands 740 ft tall, has 73 floors and a total of 2,065 bedrooms. Swissôtel The Stamford first entered the Guinness Book of Records in 1986 as the tallest hotel in the world but was later surpassed by the Baiyoke Sky Hotel in Bangkok.

10. Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center, Detroit
America's first entry in our list of tallest hotels is the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center. Standing a proud 727 ft tall, this gleaming hotel has 70 floors making this the tallest building in Michigan state and the tallest all-hotel skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere. When the hotel opened in 1977 it was the tallest hotel in the world. With 1298 rooms and 100,000 square ft of meeting place, the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center is the largest hotel in the entire Marriott chain.
