History
Egypt is a country drenched in history, extending back thousands of years. Egypt was the ideal site for the development of an early civilisation, its population protected by desert to the east and west and water to the north and south. The country then underwent numerous invasions and occupations at the hands of the Greeks, Romans and the Byzantines. Eventually came the Arabs around the 7th century, bringing Arabic and Islam with them, the language and religion still spoken and followed in Egypt today.
More recently, the addition of the Suez Canal linking the Red Sea and Mediterranean improved transport and trade throughout the country while the construction of the Aswan Dam in 1971 minimised reliance on the River Nile for agricultural output.
