There comes a time when even the most ardent cricket fan and the lover of the Full English Breakfast tires of our weather! Experts suggest we take a break away every 6 weeks or so. Whilst this is not always possible, a few holidays a year is not uncommon. Though European cheap flights offer a great chance to get away, many of us look a little further afield, where the weather is guaranteed and the pace is a trifle more relaxed!

Loon no further, let On the Beach make your ideal holiday experience a reality with a holiday in Antigua! The principle island of the Antigua and Barbuda archipelago, Antigua is a tropical romantic idyll, well populated by British Empire-era forts, some of which are ruins, whilst others have been restored to their original scenic beauty for holiday makers keen to cram in some culture to their beach jaunt!
If it is a Caribbean holiday where you can really lie back, relax and take it easy then Antigua is for you!
WeatherEnjoy a different beach for every day of your stay in Antigua and take advantage of minimum temperatures between 23 and 26° Celsius all year round, and maximum temperatures of between 27 and 31° Celsius. From September to mid November you can expect a few cooling daily showers, but on the whole the weather stays dry with plenty of sun.
Remember the sun is stronger because of Antigua is very close to the equator. Even on a seemingly breezy day the rays can take effect, so spend plenty of time chilling out in the shade and take a good suntan lotion with you!
AttractionsThose interested in history should look to Admiral Nelsons Dockyard in the English Harbour, where he spent three years of his life. The dock, found in the capital St. Johns, is home to a large contingent of wealthy yachters, many of whom are friendly and will know where best to eat and drink.
Also check out the remarkable St. Peter’s Church, featuring stucco walls with a wooden beamed ceiling. The Cathedral of St. John the Divine in St. Johns is also well worth the visit for the stunning view across the beautiful capital.
NightlifeAntigua has a booming nightlife, like many Caribbean islands. All tastes are catered for with everything from chilled out restaurants to lively beach parties. Those wanting a quieter night should head to Russell’s Bar and Seafood Restaurant in a converted fort for excellent seafood dinner followed by a stroll on the beach and a nightcap! If you want a little more excitement then why not sample a few of the cool cocktails at Club Havana, the island’s Mexican style Cantina.
LandscapeAntigua and the 30 surrounding islets are also great for explorers; both divers (who can enjoy the many coral reefs and shipwrecks) and land lovers alike will be amazed by the extraordinary flora, animal life and landscapes. Water and land lovers can combine trips to any one of many marinas, such as Falmouth Harbour Marina , which are great for a stroll, a sail or to embark on a diving trip. Many marinas have great restaurant and bar facilities.
Finally, Wallings nature reserve is a must see; here you can get a glimpse into a real rainforest packed with fauna typical of the region. Look out for low flying pelicans and lizards, two creatures thoroughly at home on the archipelago.
CultureThose planning their holiday in Antigua may wish to book their trip to coincide around the Antigua Carnival, a two day festival of parades, music, celebration, dance and costume taking place in August. In keeping with Caribbean festival tradition, calypso and steel drums feature heavily in a party not to be missed!
Antigua’s many beaches, calm yet lively locals and clear skies also make it an ideal New Years destination. Antigua like to bring in the New Year with some truly spectacular fireworks displays and outdoor parties across the island’s many beaches and bars.
