Weather

The weather is what attracts so many people to go on holidays to Majorca. 30° Celsius temperatures in summer are perfect - not too hot that going outside feels like stepping into an oven, but hot enough to give you that sought after holiday tan! The rainy season is between October to January, meaning Majorca is ideal if you're looking for sun during the February half term, just as the cold sets in across the UK! There really are hundreds of reasons why you should go on Majorca holidays!

Attractions

There is more than enough things to do to entertain the whole family on Majorca holidays and for sporting activities, it's the place to be. There are over 20 golf clubs, and opportunities for water skiing and other watersports all over the island. Numerous tennis clubs have spawned such tennis talent as Carlos Moya and superstar Rafael Nadal! If spectator sports are your thing, then visit the Son Moix stadium where La Liga outfit Real Mallorca take on the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona! For a more authentic experience, there are a number of bullfighting arenas around the island, providing you with a real insight into one of Spain’s most celebrated traditions on your holidays to Majorca.

But if you're not the sporty type, then there's lots else for you to do. Why not visit the capital, Palma? A beautiful port, Palma is host to thousands of boats, providing a picture perfect stretch of coastline. Perhaps even more spectacularl is the cathedral in the old town. Built in the 13th Century, the cathedral boasts superb architecture, is open to the public and contains the tombs of Jaime I and Jaime III (past Majorcan Kings), as well as a museum. Combined with the old village and sights such as the Bellver Castle, Palma provides tourists with a great chance to see the well preserved history of the town and the island itself.

If that Majorca holiday fund is still burning a hole in your pocket, then it might be time for some retail therapy, and Palma delivers the finest shops and department stores to keep even the most seasoned shopper entertained for hours on end on a bargain hunt around the city streets! And if you fancy a quick snack, or even a 5 course meal, Palma is home to some of the finest restaurants that Majorca has to offer, ranging from Chinese food to Spanish tapas! Your holidays in Majorca won't be complete without trying some classic Majorcan dishes - from the sausage-like sobrasada to the ensaimada pastry. Palma's cosmopolitan atmosphere makes it a must-see for visitors on Majorca holidays. In fact, it was recently voted by Spaniards as the most desirable place to live in Spain!

Landscape

So, you’ve quenched you’re cultural thirsts and you’re all shopped out. Where to next on your holidays in Majorca? For most there’s really only one place to go on Majorca holidays - the beach. With over 554 kilometers of pristine coastline, Majorca holidays offer a varied landscape of sand, caves, cliffs and of course, dazzlingly blue sea. From the beaches of Cala Millor in the east, all the way down to Palma Nova in the south west, you can relax, swim, hire out a pedalow with the family or just catch some rays!

History

Majorca was invaded by the Romans in 123 BC and occupied thereafter, during which time the major town of Alcudia and capital Palma were established. After the Byzantine Empire took control of the island, Majorca became part of the province of Sardinia, although endured a number on invasions and leadership changes right up to the seize of power by the Spanish Monarchy in the 18th Century. Majorca's attraction was a financial one - salts, olive growing, viniculture, and its ports allowed trading from all over the world.

However, the 20th Century saw a change in focus for Majorca’s industry as the island became geared towards tourism. Since the 1950s, tourists have flocked on holidays to Majorca, revitalising its economy. A recent study showed that over 19 million people passed through Palma’s Son Sant Joan Airport in 2001, and figures show a yearly increase in visiting tourists. So if you haven’t experienced a holiday to Majorca yet, you’re missing out!
