Malgrat de Mar Holidays

Malgrat de Mar Holidays

Just 60km from Barcelona’s easy UK connections, Malgrat de Mar has had official town status for well over 600 years. Traditionally agricultural and industrial, tourism is now a key activity, making for an idyllic Spain holiday.

Situated between Santa Susana and Blanes, in the south of the Costa Brava, with the rest of the region’s attractions on your doorstep, and enough to keep devoted culture vultures and sun-worshipping beach lovers happy, Malgrat de Mar makes the perfect base for your Costa Brava holidays.

Weather

Malgrat de Mar enjoys a coastal Mediterranean climate, ensuring year-round mild temperatures. Over the last 18 years, average annual rainfall has only been around 650mm. Autumn and spring are pleasant but cooler, or come in July and August to enjoy summer at its peak. Just don’t forget that high-factor sun lotion if you are coming on holidays to Malgrat de Mar during the peak summer months!

Attractions

If you fancy a change from the beach, stroll around the old fish market, or visit the sixteenth century St Nicolau church known as the Cathedral of the Coast. Those who love architecture will enjoy the modernist buildings like the Town Hall. And no holiday in Malgrat de Mar would be complete without a visit to El Castell (the castle), a tower on the top of the hill in the middle of town, surrounded by a beautiful park, offering superb panoramic views. The old town also has a small square, a market and attractive gardens.

If you don’t mind venturing further afield, visit Barcelona, or medieval Girona, or take the ferry to Tossa de Mar. Children will enjoy Water World, the dolphinarium at Blanes and the exciting Port Aventura theme park. Use the minitrain to get around locally, and regular coast trains to other Costa Brava beaches. For those who prefer their vacations active, the calm waters of Malgrat are ideal for watersports.

Nightlife

Reasonably lively without being overwhelming, there are plenty of bars and several discos along the seafront. You may prefer to make the short journey along the coast to Calella, and its bustling night scene.

Landscape

Malgrat is in the area known as the Maresme, a flat land belt resting between mountains and sea. Holidays to Malgrat de Mar centre on the long, sandy beach, divided into inviting little bays by rocks. Its pleasant promenade is lined with bars and restaurants, and its quality has been recognised for the last 10 years with the European Blue Flag. For somewhere quieter, try the beach at the mouth of the Tordera river.

Culture

There are festivals in Malgrat throughout the summer, the main one being the Festival of St. Roc in the middle of August, where you can take in choir singing, folk groups, face painting, open-air cinema and cycle racing.

For a true dose of local culture, be in town for the Festival of the Sardana dance on the first Sunday in October. The weekly street market is held on Thursday mornings.
