Landscape

Much of the city of Faro is surrounded by the Roman walls and in the older part of the city especially there are many charming winding streets and old-fashioned cobbled pathways. In the newer areas there are plenty of attractive hotels and shops whose bright colours give the area a particularly pretty appeal.

Culture

Faro has a colourful history. It was first occupied in the 8th Century by the Moors and the city is still home to both Arab and Roman ruins. In 1596 the Earl of Essex raided the island with his crusaders en route to the Holy Land and took a collection of books from the palace of the Bishop of Faro, which is still on display to this day in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. The city is also the administrative centre for the Algarve. There’s plenty for history lovers and culture vultures to see on holidays in Faro.

In the older parts of the city there are Roman walls dating back to the ninth century as well as the ruins of a 16th century convent. The Town Holiday festival is held each year on 7th September and is a great event to witness. If you take your Faro holidays in March you’ll get to witness the Traditional Burial Procession, which is full of pomp and grandeur.
