Landscape

Alvor is just five miles west of the popular resort of Portimao. Its main feature is the four mile long Torralta beach, which is a stunning stretch of white sand and clear blue waters. The beach is less crowded than many of the other resorts on the island and features several caves and coves, perfect for a romantic getaway. But if that’s not enough, holidaymakers can travel a short distance towards Portimao where the beautiful Praia da Rocha beach can be found.

Culture

It is thought Alvor was first occupied in 716 AD by the Moors. They called it Albur and it was under the control of the Moors and the Portuguese on various occasions before 1250 when the Christians conquered it for the final time. Portuguese ruler, King Don Joao II is said to have died in the 1495. The remains of his castle can still be found in the village along with those of a 16th century church. To really sample Alvor’s fascinating history and culture time your visit with one of the village’s festivals. The most popular are Feira de Alvor on March 17th and the Town Holiday on December 11th.
