Weather

The Algarve climate is typically Mediterranean with long hot summers and mild dry winters. Temperatures along the coast can reach over 30° Celsius in the summer months so be sure to bring some sun block! While temperatures do tail off in the depths of winter, you can still go on an Algarve holiday in October or March and enjoy fantastic weather.

Attractions

There's so much to do in the Algarve you'll be lucky if you can fit in even half of it! If you fancy a spot of shopping visit one of the local markets. The market in Portimao runs on the first Monday of every month and is a huge affair where you can buy anything from food and drink to locally crafted arts and crafts.

Golf is hugely popular in the Algarve and there are plenty of excellent courses to choose from around Vilamoura and Praia da Rocha. Or why not try a bit of fishing at the Big Game Fishing Centre in Portimao? There are also water parks in Quarteira and Estombar and the kids will love the sea safari in Vilamoura.

The zoo in Lagos is very popular or if you fancy a romantic excursion take one of the cruises leaving from Portimao and Vilamoura. There are also plenty of tours in the region with providers offering a range of different tours to suit all tastes. And of course, there are the beaches with miles of gorgeous white sand and blue sea. Praia da Rocha and Praia de Barril are among the most popular.

Nightlife

The nightlife in the Algarve is perfect for those who just want to have a good time. It doesn't have the reputation of Ibiza but it has just as many bars and clubs and, some would say, a much nicer atmosphere. Try Eddies bar in Lagos for a fun 'British out' atmosphere, which shows all the major football games and is well know for its darts tournaments. If it's dancing the night away that you're after visit the Phoenix nightclub. Or, if you'd rather splash the cash visit the casino in Portimao.

History

The Algarve is rich in history and culture and this is reflected in the many ruins and historical monuments on the island. In Lagos, for example, you can visit the Renaissance or Baroque churches which date back to the 9th Century. In Sagres you'll find a fortress dating back to the 14th Century and the Nossa Senhora da Graca Hermitage which is five centuries old.

Culture

If there's one thing the people on the Algarve love it's a festival. Festivals take place in various parts of the region throughout the year and the main themes of all of them are fun and colour, so they're ideal for families on holiday . The whole town takes part in each festival, many of which have been celebrated annually for hundreds of years and tourists are encouraged to join in. There are hundreds of festivals happening so there's a good chance you'll encounter one during your Algarve holiday!
