Garajau Holidays

Garajau is a picturesque village and resort on Madeira's sunny southeastern coast. The warm Atlantic waters off the coast include a marine reserve, and the lovely semi-tropical climate make Garajau holidays idyllic. Huddled around a rocky headland the resort is well served with cafes, restaurants, shops and a large hotel. The south coast highway makes it easily accessible from Funchal, the island's capital to the east, and Machico, Madeira's second town in the west. The island's airport is close, also connected by the highway, so it's easy to get to.

Weather

Garajau enjoys a wonderful sub-tropical climate due to its location and the mountainous landscape, and since it lies on the south coast it receives more sun than other parts of the island. It is sunny all year, with temperatures ranging from a low of 16° Celsius in the winter to about 25° Celsius in the summer. Outside the summer you should expect some rainfall, but these showers rarely last very long.

Attractions

There's no shortage of things to see and do on Garajau holidays. Off the coast of Garajau is a marine reserve, the Reserva Natural Parcial do Garajau, which extends from the high tide line to a depth of 50m. At the neighbouring resort at Canico de Baixo it is possible to hire snorkelling equipment or go on a scuba diving trip to explore the sea's natural wonders.

Perched atop Garajau's spectacular cliffs is a statue of Christ, a smaller version of those that stand over Rio and Lisbon. There are picnic tables and it's a great place to visit simply for the views across Funchal and out over the Atlantic Ocean. For a small excursion you could head into neighbouring Canico to check out the town's Baroque church.

Nightlife

The nightlife on Garajau holidays is typical of Madeira, laid-back and tranquil, perfect for romance or simply chilling-out. There is a choice of restaurants including the Vista Mar, which has a good menu and great views out to sea, as the name suggests. The main hotel, the Dom Pedro Garajau, hosts entertainment in the evenings such as pianists and traditional folk events.

For a slightly livelier evening during your holidays to Garajau you could head to Machico or Funchal, but many holidaymakers who come to Garajau are content to relax in the peaceful atmosphere.

Landscape

Staggering cliffs, offering breathtaking views and great scenery for walking, dominate Garajau's landscape. Inland the terrain is mountainous and covered in rich vegetation. The nearby village of Camacha is worth a visit, perched on a hillside amongst willow plantations, and home to wicker-weaving industry.

Culture

While most of Garajau's cultural entertainment is based around evenings at the village's main hotel, Funchal and Machico are convenient to get to, so you can enjoy both towns' cultural events. In February or March each year Funchal hosts one of Europe's biggest carnivals, a Rio-style parade and weekend-long party.

Funchal's New Years celebrations have gained a reputation as being some of the best in the world, with an enormous firework display at midnight. In Machico, meanwhile, it is the last Sunday in August that the town puts on a carnival, culminating with a big bonfire at the town's old beacon on Pico do Facho.
