Goa, like anywhere India we imagine, is a bit of a culture shock if you have never been before. Even so, after a couple of days you soon get into the Goan way of life. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves & there were only a couple of days that rain stopped play but then there was shopping or a bar! We hired a moped & went to at least half a dozen beaches. We would love to go again during the main season to see these beaches & the sea at their best but have to say on a sunny day it was gorgeous, hot & bright. Our nearest resort was Calungute but we often went to Baga beach. We never had a bad meal & infact the Sag Aloo just improved at every diffent restuarant! The best meal we had was in the regional capital Panjim. The only 2 negatives were the beach sellers could get annoying and all the local perverts that wanted to take pictures of my wife with cameras or mobile phones. Some asked permission most tried to do it covertly. Lovely beaches & people, great food & beers and cheap!
Useful Tips:
Try as many beaches & restuarants as possible until you find your favourite. Keep an eye on the locals trying to pictures of yur women! Enjoy the scenery, beaches & culture. Riding a moped is an expeience but be careful on the roads! A horn is a must!

Where do I start? The place has it all, unbelievably friendly people, superb food, good nitelife, idyllic beaches, warm sea, good beer, you can travel around to places like the jungle, swim under waterfalls, ride elephants, feed wild monkeys, chill by the pool, chill on the beach, do some watersports, shop till you drop at the famous arpora market, barter with the crazy sales men/women, immerse yourself in the mad mixing pot of different cultures, did i mention the food? You are only a few hours away from the taj mahal and the madness of what is mumbai. Seriously, spend that little extra getting there and i will guarantee that you can live like a king/queen/god and i bet you do not spend more than £500 in 2 weeks. So good I am going again this year as i did not do nearly as much as i wanted to in my last 2 weeks there. Plus the weather aint half bad either!!
Useful Tips:
BARTER!! everything is a game to these guys, give it a week and you will think everything has a price it so much fun! dont be scared to ask! the locals are like walking guidebooks! the taxi drivers will be more than happy to take you on excursions for half the cost of official tour guides. They will take you to the best restaurants, introduce you to the craziest people. In fact you can hire them for the day for next to nothing, its like having your own personal chauffeur! try and learn a little bit of the language, immerse yourself in the culture (this is not magaluf!). The locals are the most warm and accomdating in the world (in my experience anyway) Go for an adventure! They first time you visit and if you are used to european package hols this will be the biggest eye opener for you. At first it can be quite daunting (dusty roads, random cows walking about on roads) but once you get your confidance there is so much goa offers apart from sea and sand.

We first went to Goa in 1997, wondering what a holiday would be like in a 'third world' country. What a wonderful surprise. We stayed at the Sodders Renton Manor in Arpora and although the rooms are basic, they have everything you need.Firm (!) beds, clean linen every day, en suite shower room and happy, smiling staff, from the cleaners to the waiters. We have also stayed at the Abalone, opposite the Renton and found the same welcome. Nothing was too much trouble, pool cleaned every day, food very good and the do-it-yourself breakfast buffet set us up for the day.Goa itself is fabulous, scenery, climate, beaches and the people! So friendly and accommodating.Once you get past the lookie-lookie syndrome, the stallholders are so chatty and happy.Restaurants are bliss with authentic dishes, well served. We ate on the beach many times and were never disappointed.Steve's shack on Candolim beach deserves a mention-totally customer orientated and their spring rolls - yum, yum. Go,you'll love it.
Useful Tips:
Take high factor sun screen & minimum clothing! Watch out on the roads particularly if you hire a bike! Manic driving in towns and no left or right hand driving, mostly down the middle, or wherever they can find a space.Try out the taxis & tuc-tucs, they're not expensive. The beach shacks provide sun beds & brollies & excellent food.If you go at Xmas/New Year the celebrations are wonderful & the crowds enormous.Markets in Anjuna & elsewhere along the coast are a real sensory overload-be prepared to haggle, haggle.Be open minded about what you see as it's a whole culture away from ours.Arpora is inland, but Candolim 20 mins.Little Vagator half hour, Charles' place, amazing.Coco beach, very different, Morjim beach, vast.Seawaves shack Candolim, Brittos,Coffee Day cafe, Honey Bee in Arpora 50 yds from hotels, amazing coffee, free mozzie spray, lovely end to a beach day before evening. Please tip beach boys, they work hard all day for us,away from their own homes and families.

I am very reluctant to let the charm of this little resort be known. Candolim is delightful with lots of exceptionally good value restaurants and shops. It is well positined for sight seeing. My only critisism would be for the sea - it is very dangerous if you are not an very, very strong swimmer as the current and tides are very strong and the beach shelves away really steeply.
Useful Tips:
The Sheetal Restaurant at the Silversands Resort is the best Goan food you will ever taste with very good service. Don't be 'over persuaded' by the guys in the jewellers (although OK, they are there to make a living).

25th time to India, first time in Arpora, and totally loved it. Our hotel, the Abalone Resort, offered great food, friendly service and a large clean pool in fairly rural surroundings. Approx. 2 miles to Baga beach by (cheap) taxi. Handy also for the N. Goa beaches of Anjuna, Mandrem, Morjim and Ashvem. Forget the once beautiful Arumbol, which has been colonised mainly by ganja-puffing Russians with attitude! Highly recommended.
Useful Tips:
Chear food, cheap clothes, silver and gold jewellery.

We were based in Baga at the Beira Mar. This was a marvellous base to get out and about to visit temples, the cathedral in Old Goa, waterfall & spice plantation. Buses stopped at bottom of our hotel, we also had easy access to taxis & tuk tuks. Great beaches within easy reach and lots of shops & markets for shopping. Hotel was basic but had 2 great swimming pools and restaurant, with food cooked as you ordered. Staff helpful and friendly. Will definitely re-visit, well worth the money spent!!
Useful Tips:
Get your tiger and lemon balm for mossie bites, a hat if you are thinning on top and decent sandals for uneven roads. Drink bottled water only. Remember this is a 3rd world country enjoy the beaches & scenery!!
