My first impression was - Wow! I felt as if I belonged in some strange way. Our accommodation was not the best we have had and for the first 24 hours I agonised over the thought of spending 2 whole weeks in what was a disappointing choice of small hotel. The second day on the island we decided to hire a car for a week - this was our passport to exploring the island. What a brilliant decision, within no time at all we had driven out of Skala, our resort, and were up in the hills, exploring monasteries, picking wild flowers and savouring the amazing scenery. Everything was peaceful, apart from a few goats grazing in the fields amongst the olive trees. Was this what it was like in paradise? I began to wonder. Within a period of 24 hours we had totally recoved from our disappointment over our very basic and cramped hotel room. That last evening as we dined in a Taverna in Skala by candlelight, we raised our glasses and promised that we would return to this enchanting island.
Useful Tips:
Remember - this is Greece. Accommodation is far more basic than in a lot of more developed countries. The people more than make up for this, they will bend over backwards to look after you. They love children - family values are still very important here. Everything is at a slower pace than back home. If you need to get away and chill out - go to Greece and if you want a beautiful island that is still not overly developed - then this is the island for you

The best of the Ionian Islands, not overdeveloped. A lot quieter than Corfu. Green and peaceful. An island to explore by car from Fiskardo in the north to Skala in the south. Sami in the East to Argostoli, Lassi and Lixouri in the West. Lovely sandy beaches on the west and south. Stony and shingle in the north and east, but with many quiet coves and beaches there to be discovered where you can be the only ones there. Make sure you visit the museums and castles in the morning as they close usually between about 2pm to 3:30pm. Argostoli Archaelogical museum closed Monday and Cultural Museum closed Sunday. Fiskardo well worth a visit, but beware Tavernas and Restaurants along the harbour are expensive. Make sure you also visit the little village of Assos. Regular half hourly ferry from Argostoli to Lixouri is €8.10 for a car and two passengers, but is worth it at least one way as the drive between the two is quite long on the winding coastal roads.

We loved Kefalonia so much when we visited in 2008 that we came back in 2009 with my Parents. It didn't disappoint the second time around. My parents said it was the best holiday they had had in years. We thoroughly enjoyed chilling in the sun. We would recommend it to others. It's a great place for families and couples. Very quite which we love.
Useful Tips:
Agia Efimia, Myrtos Beach, Fiskardo, Melissani Lake are all great places to visit. For all those that saw Captain Corelli's Mandolin Sami is the place to visit.

Excellent island, good that prices haven't increased, we have the chancellor to thank for the poor state of the £. I would recommend this as a holiday destination for couples and families. I would also have no hesitation in booking through on the beach again, what they say is what you get, good value for money and ease of service.
Useful Tips:
If going May to mid september try to ensure air conditioning. If you hire a car go to the big supermarkets a mile or so outside Argostoli. I have found the best place for meat and deli is in Argostoli itself near the SPAR on the front as you go in a big Salmon coloured deli and butchers, one of the butchers is English speaking, however you can get what you need with the others, just takes a bit longer. Most garages sell wine from the local co-operative 5 litres of red 9 euros and just less for white; it's what they serve as house wine in most restaurants. Don't book on the trips if you can help it at the moment I think it is 15 euro's each to go to Argostoli by night, either get a bus (approx 5 euro''s return) or hire a car; cheaper if you hire over here to pick up at the airport. Go to hire car comparison sites for best prices. If you want to be adventurous you can get a long let of a holiday apartment for 12 months prices around 400 euros a month, happy holidays.

Unless you have a car on this Island you are confined to the area of your hotel as public transport is non existant. We paid 17 Euros each way to a mediocre shopping area to try to find restaurants and a supermrket as the food in our hotel was inedible. Organised tours for a family of 4 always exceed 100 Euros, and are very boring for young children. Restaurant prices are very expensive and tryig to buy fresh fruit was also very expensive.
Useful Tips:
Hire a car or don't go!

We booked through On The beach and got a beuatiful hotel in Svronata, fantastic flights and a wonderful holiday. We loved the peace of Svronata and Argostoli, the fantastic views at Myrtos Beach and Aesos, and the lively areas of Scala and Fiskardo. We would go back today if you let us, make sure you book today!
Useful Tips:
Visit Myrtos Beach, the most beautiful beach I've ever seen, and the town of Aesos as it is so tranquil and gorgeous. Wherever we went on the island, the hospitality, food and drink were wonderful.

The weather was perfect. No rain in sight and lovely warm sun for 12 hours a day. The type of beach varied depending on which bit of the island you go to, but the water was always warm and crystal clear. Not much to see in terms of historical landmarks etc but a great holiday for those who want to lay on the beach and do (and think) about absolutely nothing. Try not to get caught out by all the shops closing between 12-3pm. The locals usually tend to come out later in the evening, and the town square usually get much livelier past 8 or 9 pm. We would recommend you choose a hotel with a sea view and rent a car for the duration of your trip. That way you get to tour the entire island and see how every little town differs from the rest. Car rental is cheap if you do a little research and book early. The food was good, but the exchange rate did sting a little. We would have been alright back when the pound bought 2 euros but we found it a tad pricey.
Useful Tips:
Get a beach umbrella, and wear lots of sun block. Get a car if you can, tour the entire island. Food is good everywhere, but weak pound may cause things to get expensive. People are friendly, which is always nice. Kids may get bored here, but couples will love it.

Soveranata kefalonia. still unsploit but so easy (with a car ) to get every where. Nights spent in Argostoli, or lassi, such a great location only 5mins from the airport. superb apartments for 3pp, spacious and very afforable.
Useful Tips:
remember this is greece so every thing is very laid back, do not expect fantastic furniture or 5* service. The beauty of greece is the laid back people and places of beauty.
