Crete has everything for everyone.. For those who like exploring diverse cultures and places to those who just like to sit and laze in the sun. Historic Crete offers archeology, wonderful musuems and many places to visit , from Monasteries to the moving Overseas Allied cemeteries, giving the visitor an insight to Cretan history. A visit to Spinalonga ( East Crete) provides an interesting afternoon telling the story of this once strategic military Island that became the home of the Greek lepers until the 1950's. Beaches worth a special mention are Vai in The East and Elafonissi and Falasarna in the West.... but take a car and you will find many little coves with lovely liitle tavernas , Afrata for example serves the most fresh and wonderful sea food. Cretan people are wonderful hosts, the food although very greek has many mouthwatering dishes that are special to Crete, a must is the lamb with feta cheese. For families try water parks, go karts & scuba diving Crete has it all!!!

If you want a basic holiday crete has many rooms to let or apartments that offer very good value. West Crete is a favourite with the Scandinavians and less Britsh go there than the East. In the West, the pace is less touristy, Chania offers fantastic cosmopolitan shopping aswell as the famous leather lanes, it is even possible to have shoes made to measure there!! Try the little taverna's that are dotted about the Island, they often have home made food which is always so very good. A car makes Island exploring so much easier and is good value... The jouney from the west over the Mountains to the South to Palechora affords stunning scenery and wildlife and a white knuckle ride too... Buses and taxis are reliable in Crete, Buses are very cheap but journies can be long. Many Pools in hotels are available to outside guests and have beach bars, they do offer good value drinks and snacks. Try learning the language,try the food and talk to the locals, Cretans appreciate this.
