Comments:
Being a confirmed beach lover I was rather concerned to learn I was staying on the banks of the River Nile. How wrong could I have been? At sunrise hot air balloons took off from the shore to give holidaymakers the most picturesque views of both the river and city, through the day the Nile was alive with an array of sights and sounds, locals fishing in small boats, cruise ships taking holiday makers up and down the river, goats, horses and donkeys could be seen taking a drink at the waters edge, children were washing out clothes or washing themselves, a real insight into Egyption life. At night the cruise ships looked incredible with their sparkling lights and the sunset was just beautiful. As I sat by the river sampling local beverages I truely thought that this was one of the most fascinating places I had ever visited. Whilst I relished the culture and scenery my 8 yr old along with a posse of other children spent their days fishing with nets for tadpoles. Great fun!!!
Useful Tips:
Be aware of taxi drivers that offer to take you to the sights but then insist on a detour to visit a ceramic or pottery factory. These factories are staffed by family or friends and it is really hard not to purchase anything because they make you feel so welcome, offering hospitality drinks and small gifts to any accompanying children. Once your child is in possession of a beaded necklace or small pottery animal you feel obliged to make a purchase.

Luxor is a great location to visit, the weather is great all year round. The locals are very friendly sometimes to friendly, just be firm with them if you dont want to be followed by them down the road trying to sell you stuff. Luxor is a great place to start your adventure in Egypt it is full of historical sites to visit as well as great hotels. We spent 2 weeks there. Where as other people spent one week there and one week by the red sea. Some other people spent one week cruising the Nile and one week in Luxor. Remember that most of the hotels are 5 Star all inclusive so you get great value for money as well! When we went it was our first Holiday with On The Beach Holidays. We have recommended them to all our friends and we have just booked our third holiday with them to Marmaris in Turkey.
Useful Tips:
1.When you arrive at airport the locals try and carry your bags for tips make sure you have some us$1 bills otherwise you will end up giving them £50 egyptian (£5 English)as this is the lowest note you will get from the bank in the uk. 2.Dont book your trips in the hotel as you can get better deals at some of the smaller offices outside especially if you pay uk/us cash.Shop around before you book & make sure you take plenty of hard Cash for best deals in everything! 3.Make sure you fly up to Cairo for the day to visit pyrimads/ museum and market. 4.Take a Balloon flight over the Nile you will get great pictures! 5.Have dinner on the Nile, we booked through an other hotel. The food was great. 6. There is a McDonalds by Luxor Temple for the kids also Pizza hut / Kentucky Fried Chicken next to the Pyramisa Isis Hotel.

We have visited Luxor 5 times in the past 3 years. we are a family with two girls currently 15 and 19 and Luxor has everything we want from a holiday. Hotels are comfortable and welcomming We stayed at the Pyramisa Isis 4 times and once at the Gaddis. Egyptians can be very irritating and if you are going shopping allow 3 times longer than you expect. We have been all inclusive and half board, there are plenty of good resteraunts offering very good value for money. Plenty of history, and a day trip diving in the Red Sea is tiring but veryu manageable and well worth it. Use local tour guides to arrange trips they are much cheaper, a balloon ride accross the nile from the Valley of the Kings should be £25-£30 per person. Hire a bike from £2.00 a day (recommend this for the winter only) take the mini busses to get around cheaper than taxi's and more interesting.
Useful Tips:
Arrange local sightseeing with a reliable taxi driver and insist that you do not go to Papyrus museum, Alabaster factory, governtment Shop etc. unless you want to part with more money than you need to. Trust the Calleche drivers, but ensure you agree a fee, a route and a currency befor you set off, walk a while before agreeing a price (including tip for the boy, dog, horse and or driver), they will follow you and their price will fall by the metre. Do visit Murphy's bar for football, pool, good food and reasonabley priced drinks, oh they also have a disco

For our 14th visit we combined a cruise on Lake Nasser with 2 weeks in Luxor. Luxor has everything you could wish for in a holiday. Culture including probably some of the best sights in the world, Temples, Tombs, Museums and easy access to the Pyramids - do it the cheap and cheerful way- by Train! Relaxing hotels, providing lovely pools and gardens - ideal for chilling out after trips out - do trips early morning to avoid the afternoon sun. Ask at your hotel for a reputable guide to show you around Luxor itself, include a visit to the markets. Take a felucca on the Nile and visit crocodile Island, and the mini Zoo at the Jollieville resort. If traders or anyone is too persistent in vying for your custom, be firm in saying no, any hesitation may be seen as a chance for them to be even more persistent! Transport around Luxor is cheap, as are the many coffee shops and restaurants. Luxor can be noisy, especially when a lot of cruise boats are moored, but accept this as part of the holiday.
Useful Tips:
As previously mentioned traders can be a nuisance, but remember this is a poor country and everyone needs to make a living! Plan trips with as early a start as possible, temperatures can easily reach 40degrees. So pack high factor sun protection along with insect repellants. The sights are endless, Karnak temple is magnificent, The Valley of The Kings is amazing. On your first visit you will no doubt see these as well The Temple of Hatshepsut, but there is so much more as well that many visitors dont see, including the "workers village" and some wonderful tombs in the western valley. Eating out is cheap - so many just stay in their hotels without trying the many restaurants on offer - try Maxines - fantastic value, clean with friendly staff or The Lantern, owned by an English Lady who serves Home made English food as well as traditional meals. Luxor is an ideal base for visits to Aswan or Cairo - both are easy by train. Now, don't tell too many people, we want to keep it unspoilt!!
