History

Istanbul's history is what makes it the city it is today. Artifacts tell us the first civilisation in Istanbul arrived as early as 5500 BC, although the city was named as Byzantion under King Byzas in around 667 BC. Like many other ancient cities, Istanbul underwent capture and occupation at the hands of the Romans. During this time the city was renamed as Constantinople, and eventually became the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. The Empire had adopted many Greek traditions, thus Istanbul became subject to many Greek Orthodox Christian practices, including the building of many churches. It is this diversity which remains unique to Istanbul today. Istanbul was stripped of its place as Turkey's capital in 1923, although still remains as the country's most densely populated city after much development in the 20th century. Although many Greeks moved back to their homeland, their influence is still noticeable in the city which is mainly Muslim today, and again provides a multi cultural feel to the city itself.
