Comments:
Extremely poor. The billng of new Caribben is a joke. The moon would have had more atmosphere
Useful Tips:
Nothing currently but maybe in 20 years time, things might have advanced. The placeis littered with uncompleted building projects and no sign of recent progression

Comments:
Having been to Sal and Santa Maria 9 years ago I was really prepared to see massive changes. Yes there has been, and still is a lot of building work going on but the town itself is still very much Cape Verdean. Kids playing in the streets, women sitting by the roadside with bright baskets of fruit and the hot African sun burning down. The windsurfing and kitesurfing potential is incredible with the current Windsurf World Champion, Josh Angulo, living and running a centre in Santa Maria. The local fishermen land their catch every day at the town pier and the local restaurants serve it up every night. Caiparinhas and Sagres beer the local drinks of choice although there is a local wine coming through which is getting better.... I love it here and will be coming back again and again. It is Africa. It can be basic. But if you like something different and are ready to get in amongst it, Santa Maria and Sal are for you.
Useful Tips:
If you don't windsurf / kitesurf / surf / fish then there is not much else to do on Sal - the other islands may be better for you but they are only a short hop on a plane / boat away. But if you want winter wind and waves and sunshine it cannot be beaten. There are all-inclusive resorts where people come and love the weather and the food and stay in the resort and have a great time but I think that is missing the point of coming to an African island. Tourist visits include the amazing salt mines and the Blue Eye dive hole. I love Santa Maria town pier and Punta Preta to watch the windsurfing and kitesurfing. Big game fishing is great fun and can be arranged.

Comments:
Sal is all sand with very few trees so seems featureless as you drive the 20 mins towards Santa Maria. The beach is fantastic with a constant breeze at this time of year. The waves are big but this makes actual swimming tricky. Main hotels are mostly on the beach but other smaller ones are in the town where there are plenty of places to eat though not all are always easy to find. Fish is served everywhere and is local and good. A few bars but only in town. Friendly people. Definitely a holiday for those who like the beach, diving, sail boarding etc.
Useful Tips:
Take a trip around the island it only takes half a day though slightly longer if you do lunch as well.
