If you like your holidays full of Brits abroad, then you’ll adore Tenerife Holidays. The largest of the Canary isles and one of the most popular holiday destinations, the island is bursting with self-catering apartments, seafront hotels and all-inclusive resorts to ensure it remains a hotbed of tourist action.
Mirroring the rocky-road terrain of its neighbouring islands, Tenerife is yet another victim of volcanic violation, which not only explains its hill-billy bumps and breaks across the island, but the charcoal-grey and jet-black sands of the natural beaches that have formed there, including the beautiful Playa Jardin.
That’s not to say that you can’t lie back and relax upon a gorgeous golden beach though. Tejina has plenty of naturally golden sweeping sands while elsewhere, the powers that be have had sand imported onto coastlines across this Canary favourite, in particular, the lively locations of Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Americas. Attracting hordes of tourists and travellers each month, these two southern spots draw in couples and families alongside same-sex groups of guys and girls, all looking for some guaranteed sunshine, good food and a buzzing nightlife. And when you do want to escape the sights and sounds of party town, there’s always Mount Teide. The dormant volcano that enters the charts as the third largest in the world, you can’t leave the island without a heroic snap or two next to the mountainous mass.

On Tenerife Holidays one of the main attractions on this Canary Island is the weather. Referred to as the ‘Island of Eternal Spring’, you’d think that the climate would remain beautifully balanced throughout the year, however the north and south are divided into two weather fronts, with the central mountainous region acting as a barrier between the two. Slap-bang in the middle of Tenerife, Mount Teide is visible from several of the surrounding beaches. The highest point on the island, during the winter months it’s not uncommon to see snow-capped peaks complete with Spanish skiers, but it’s also the reason why the north and south of the island has such climatic variation. While the south is protected by the mountains from the harsh north-east winds, the north is exposed to much cooler and wetter weather. In fact, in winter, the average temperature of the sea tends to hover around 19˚ whilst the land temperature stays at 15˚, so if you want to warm yourself up, it’s advisable to get your swimming togs on. The south on the other hand benefits from hot, dry weather from May right through to November, and is one of the reasons why the majority of tourist resorts are positioned here. With very little rain, and only the odd cloud blocking the sun in January to February, you can rock up on your holidays here all year round with the guarantee of getting a tan.
A fantastic family destination, like most holidays in the Canary Islands, Tenerife has a wealth of day trips and excursions to entertain the young at heart, and the young in age. Choose between Loro Park – an original parrot park that has now grown and developed into an impressive animal kingdom full of penguins, dolphins, monkeys, tigers, and of course, parrots; Jungle Park – a similar theme to Loro but with some larger, wilder beasts (lions, pumas and birds of prey); Siam Park – the largest water park in Europe with rides, flumes and it’s very own wave palace; and Tiede National Park – home to Mount Teide, brave the journey to the top on foot, or take a cable car to the peak and take in the mouth-dropping panoramic views.
If you prefer to stay rooted to the sun bed on your Tenerife Holidays, you won’t be stuck for lazy-day locations either. In Puerto de la Cruz, the award-winning Playa Jardin beach with its black sands and picturesque gardens provides some great scenic eye-candy, while Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas both have golden man-made beaches, courtesy of Africa’s Sahara sand. Fronting the two most popular destinations on the island, the latter is a real ‘all-in-one’ resort. A magnet for 18-30s, young families and lively couples, Playa de las Americas’ beaches, shops and vivacious nightlife mean you don’t even have to leave the confines of the seafront to have a good time. And if foam parties, karaoke nights and all-night discos don’t float your boat, you can always take a more traditional slant on your evening entertainment and book tickets to a Spanish opera, watch some flamenco fusion dancing or fill up on food, wine and dancing at the Medieval Dinner Show at the Castillo de San Miguel.

Owing to the two varying climates in the north and south of the island, it’s logical that the landscape alters across Tenerife too. While the south is dry with little vegetation, the north has a lovely lush terrain that’s flush with pine forests, palm trees and banana plantations. The largest export on the island, you can not only visit working plantations, you’ll find that bananas pop up in every shape and form across the island, including in the local liquor, so if you’re keen to try a sweet, traditional tipple, this should be at the top of your list.
Other edible delicacies to try include Gofio – a mix of roasted wheat, maize and barley, Papas Arrugadas – wrinkly new potatoes laden with salt and Bienmesabes to finish – a syrupy pudding made of almonds and honey. Alternatively, you can play it safe with everything from pasta to paella so if you’re craving a British dish, or want to chow down on Chinese, you won’t have to wait until you get back to the UK. You’ll even be able to order it in English as most of the natives are bi-lingual.
Whilst the religion in Tenerife is Roman Catholic, not everyone on the island practices, and although the main event of the year - the Santa Cruz carnival is loosely connected to saints’ days, the festivities don’t really have a religious meaning. The different theme year after year further cements the fact it’s now primarily a social event.
