As the largest of the Canary Islands and possibly one of the most popular, Tenerife boasts all year round sun and astonishing variety into one single island. The north is lush and green with tropical rainforests and banana plantations where the south is hot and dry. In the centre, the huge dormant volcano Mount Teide rises into the clouds amid an amazing moon-like landscape. The culture is just as varied as the climate, where you will find hectic nights out, watersports, shopping, quiet and beautiful scenery and traditional villages to visit, all on one island.
Mirroring the rocky-road terrain of its neighbouring islands, Tenerife is yet another victim of volcanic eruption, which not only explains its hill-billy bumps and breaks across the island, but the charcoal-grey and jet-black sands of the natural beaches that have formed there, including the beautiful Playa Jardin.

Tenerife is popular all year round due to its fantastic sunny weather lasting through from summer to winter. During the summer you will find high temperatures rising through the 20s to approximately 26ºC in August. During winter the temperatures range from approximately 12ºC and 18ºC.
Tenerife is a fantastic holiday destination to suit everyone’s holidaying needs. Whether you want a relaxing family break or a non-stop party in the sun, On The Beach can recommend a resort just for you!
Santa Cruz is Tenerife’s historic capital. It’s home to the Canaries’ most spectacular carnival - a fortnight-long fiesta to rival Rio. A short ride away from Santa Cruz is Las Teresitas, a beautiful beach with waving palm trees and golden sand shipped in from the Sahara desert.
On the south coast of Tenerife is the popular tourist area of Playa De Las Americas which is a clubber’s paradise with plenty of bars and nightclubs, entertainment, restaurants and fast food and sandy beaches all with exciting watersports.
For those wanting to be close to the action although not directly in it, Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje are perfect choices popular with families and couples. Both neighbouring Las Americas, Los Cristianos is a charming fishing village and Costa Adeje is a quieter resort famed for boutique shopping, both traditional and modern restaurants and gorgeous sandy beaches and beach side cocktail bars. Puerto De La Cruz in the north is the oldest resort in the Canaries. It offers old world charm, tropical gardens – check out the sea parrots and the dolphins – and a beautiful lido with waterpools, palms and fountains.

Mount Teide and the National Park is one of the most popular tourist spots in Tenerife and is a must if you are visiting the island. The Teide National Park includes a huge volcanic crater out of which rises Mount Teide which is the highest mountain in Spain. You will find cable cars which will take you up to the top of Mount Teide, however these are a little pricey so most visitors choose to walk which is well worth it due to the breathtakingly beautiful views.

The natives of Tenerife were known as the Guanches who were the inhabitants of Tenerife until the Spanish conquest of the XV century. Traces of the Guanches can still be found in Tenerife today, even though it is dominantly a Spanish culture, for example certain words of their language still remain, including the word Tenerife which was the name of a great Guanche king named Tinerfe. Also, you will be able to find many features from when the Guanches lived on the island including caves and pyramids, clay pots and engravings on certain rocks.
Whilst the religion in Tenerife is Roman Catholic, not everyone on the island practices, and although the main event of the year - the Santa Cruz carnival is loosely connected to saints’ days, the festivities don’t really have a religious meaning. The different theme year after year further cements the fact it’s now primarily a social event.
