Head towards the town you'll find an example of the modern architecture that brings Gran Canaria into the 21st century: the Maspalomas Congress Center (even though it is formally in Meloneras, not Maspalomas) is a gargantuan building that looks like the roof wasn't nailed on! It's the main center for all the conventions and conferences that come to Gran Canaria and is host to the occasional dance party with international DJs and a few thousand of your new closest friends!
Whatever you want to say about modern architecture, it certainly does house some spectacular shops in Maspalomas. The town is wall-to-wall shopping centers, mostly dealing in high quality clothing, jewellery and perfume. However, just head to the beaches and you will soon be away from the buzz and back in the tropical paradise you really came to discover. The beaches are really an extension of the famous sand dunes and they are the best and the most sandy closest to that attraction. As you go towards the west off the promenade you will get to a breakwater area where you can look on as the Atlantic swells break against the rocks.
