History

Mahon has been the capital of Menorca since 1721 when the British decided to move it from Ciutadella due to the economic draw of its deep port, which received Carthaginian, Phoenician and Greek sailors hundreds of years ago.

Mahon was named a Roman municaplity in the first Century BC before becoming a part of the Byzantine Empire, while in 1535 the town was seized by pirate Barbarossa, who destroyed the town after a battle with local people. You'll find this event commemorated by the Fort De Sant Felip which King Phillip II constructed to remember the event.
