Mahon Holidays

What better way to sample the delights of the Balearics than with a break in Menorca's city of Mahon? As both a municipality and capital city of the island, Mahon holidays offer a range of activities and amenities to entertain the huge amount of visitors it receives from all over the world. Located on the east coast of the island, the town is lively and popular but has retained all the beauty and tradition of a typical Menorcan resort, with plenty of cultural events, a thriving port, and fantastic restaurants.

Clean and safe, with a fantastic beach, Mahon would make an ideal break for anyone of any age, so whatever type of holiday you want. Whether you want to relax or party, Mahon is a fantastic place to spend your Menorcan holidays!

Weather

It's not often that people will think of going on holidays to Mahon outside of the peak summer months, but if you want to beat the crowds and enjoy slightly cooler temperatures then visiting in September or October is a great idea. With temperatures averaging 21° Celsius you'll still enjoy warm weather but without excessive heat. There is a slight chance of rainfall, while evening temperatures, at around 15° Celsius, are very pleasant indeed.

If a tan is what you want though, then July and August are made for you! With temperatures peaking at an average of 30° Celsius, that hot Mediterranean summer will definitely have you reaching for the sun cream! You'll also be set for a great evening out as temperatures are about 24° Celsius; this, combined with the lack of rainfall during summer months will ensure a warm and comfortable night out.

Attractions

Apart from the beach, which will make a great day of relaxtion, the port is the place to be seen on Mahon holidays. Serene by day and bustling by night, it offers a fantastic range of bars and restaurants serving traditional food and drinks alongside a wonderful setting, perfect for daydreaming about owning one of the many beautiful yachts on view!

You'll also want to photograph the many historical buildings; the oldest, Arch De San Roque, features the only remains of a city wall that surrounded the town long ago. Also well worth a visit of is the Church of Santa Maria, which was built in 1748. To relax after a great day's sightseeing, why not head to the Xoriguer Gin Distillery, which will allow you to sample the local gins on offer?

If the city lifestyle is too much for you then why not make the short journey from Mahon to nearby Binibeca and enjoy a day of total rest and relaxation on one of the long sandy beaches?

Nightlife

Foodies will think they're in Heaven on holidays in Mahon as the town has all manner of gastronomic outlets serving everything from Spanish to Chinese! For a lively evening out, the port will be your best bet, with family-friendly restaurants especially welcoming of children.

If you want to party though, and you're looking beyond your hotel entertainment, then a visit to Cova D'en Xoroi at Cala n Porter is the right choice! This fantastic disco is set in a cave, and features an amazing sound and light system!

Landscape

You'll want to take plenty of memory for your camera on Mahon holidays as the town boasts one of the most amazing landscapes in all of Menorca. It features one of the deepest natural ports in the world and is the most impressive feature of the town, with beautiful yachts and boats sitting atop vivid blue waters. A walk along the marina will provide hours of relaxation. The townspeople's homes are similarly wonderful, huddled close together with winding streets and virtually non-existant pavements.

Traffic in the town is relatively calm, making the atmosphere very ambient, but if you're looking for a romantic evening stroll, head along to the beach, where the golden sands and sea offer a romantic view. With mountains and forests sitting alongside ancient architecture, Mahon is never short of a view to gaze at admiringly.

History

History fans will be in their element, with no shortage of great sights to see. Mahon has been the capital of Menorca since 1721 when the British decided to move it from Ciutadella due to the economic draw of its deep port, which received Carthaginian, Phoenician and Greek sailors hundreds of years ago.

Mahon was named a Roman municaplity in the first Century BC before becoming a part of the Byzantine Empire, while in 1535 the town was seized by pirate Barbarossa, who destroyed the town after a battle with local people. You'll find this event commemorated by the Fort De Sant Felip which King Phillip II constructed to remember the event.

Culture

One of Mahon's most impressive features is its culture, which is evident even in everyday life. Head along to the main pedestrian street to sample stores selling all manner of gifts from shoes to handicrafts - ideal for gifts to take back home as a reminder of your holidays in Mahon! You should go to the market, which resides in a building originally intended as a convent built in 1751. Aside from shopping, it also hosts musical events, so ask locals for details!

If you're a theatre-lover, why not take a trip to the Teatre Principal? It offers a range of operas, plays and films all year round, while a popular Opera Festival takes place every August. These are always extremely popular, so check the local papers to find out times and dates of productions!
