Weather

History
Menorca was originally attractive to the Greeks and Phoenicians as a means of expanding their Mediterranean trading empire because Menorca's location was central to shipping routes between the rest of Europe as well as parts of modern day Asia and Africa. The Romans took over in 123 BC and it was during this time which the island experienced some early developments - roads were built and settlements such as Ciutadella and Mahon were well and truly established.
The island then endured occupation at the hands of the Byztantines, but it wasn't until much later under the British in the 1700s when Menorca began to flourish. Often referred to the island's Golden Age, the British built about new roads, schools and switched capital cities. It is a partnership which lives on today, as British tourists flock back Menorca every year!
More recently, the island has benefited enormously from the increasing availability of tourism, with things really beginning to take off after the building of the Sant Climent airport in 1969.
